Mont Saint-Michel across the bay at low tide
Normandy to the Camargue · every bookable tour in France

Paris is where France starts. Not where it ends.

Which Mont Saint-Michel ticket actually gets you inside the abbey. Which Bordeaux day includes the tasting and which just drives past the vines. Whether the Riviera-in-one-day minibus is worth twelve hours. Every tour in France, reviewed and ranked.

Where the day happens

Twenty-two French regions. Paris is one of them.

The Riviera corniche, the Gironde estuary, the Calanques, the landing beaches, the Corsican coast road. Pick the part of the country you are actually standing in.

The vineyard day

Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, Alsace: four regions, four different days out.

Bordeaux sends you to the Médoc and Saint-Émilion by minibus. Burgundy is a slow crawl of walled climats south of Beaune. Champagne is a lift down into chalk. Alsace is a village-to-village road with a glass at each end of it.

The measured truth

The ten most-booked tours in France are all in Paris.

The first one that is not is the abbey at Mont Saint-Michel, down at twenty-second. So here is the top of the list honestly, and the rest of this page is the other France.

Paris

Over half of France’s bookings happen inside the Périphérique.

Pretending otherwise would be a lie, so here it is in one band rather than spread over the page. The monuments that need booking, the cruise that outsells everything in the country, and the two museums with a compulsory time slot.

Nowhere else

The lavender window, the chalk cellars, and a car built to carry eggs.

Vineyards and cathedrals turn up all over Europe. These three are French and stay French, and each of them runs on a rule worth knowing before you book.

Six weeks, then gone

The Lavender Window

The Valensole plateau colours from about the third week of June and is cut in the first days of August, so the window is six weeks and it moves with the year. The fields sit an hour and a half above Aix, the light everyone photographs is the two hours after sunrise, and the plants are a working crop — the tractors do not wait for the coach.

Thirty metres down

The Chalk Cellars

Reims and Épernay keep their bottles in crayères, chalk pits cut by Roman quarrymen and reused as cellars: constant temperature, no light, kilometres of galleries under the streets. Most houses take visitors by appointment only, and the good tastings are booked out weeks before the harvest.

Designed for a ploughed field

The 2CV

The brief that produced the Citroën 2CV asked for a car that could carry a basket of eggs across a ploughed field without breaking one, and the suspension it produced is why the ride still feels like a rowing boat. They run as open-top city tours now, in Paris and along the Riviera, at about walking pace with the roof rolled back.

Normandy

Normandy: the beaches, the abbey and the tapestry.

The landing beaches run roughly eighty kilometres of coast, from Utah in the west to Sword in the east, and the American cemetery stands above Omaha at Colleville-sur-Mer. Most guided days leave from Bayeux, which is also where the eleventh-century tapestry is kept. Mont Saint-Michel is a further two hours west, and the abbey at the top is a separate timed ticket from the village below.

Plan backwards

Timed entry, a tide table and a six-week flower: book these first.

Most of France can be arranged from the hotel the night before. These four cannot. They run on ticket releases, closing days and a calendar that has nothing to do with when your flight lands.

  1. 01Eiffel Tower Entry Ticket with Optional Summit AccessSummit access is a separate, limited allocation on top of the tower ticket — and the lift to the top stops in high wind.
  2. 02Louvre Guided Tour with Reserved Access & Boat CruiseClosed on Tuesdays, and a timed slot is compulsory even when you already hold a ticket.
  3. 03Mont Saint-Michel: Entry Ticket to Mont-Saint-Michel AbbeyThe abbey at the summit is its own timed ticket, separate from getting onto the mount at all.
  4. 04Gorges of Verdon and Fields of Lavender TourThe Valensole fields colour in late June and are cut in the first week of August. Outside that, the tour is a drive.
When it turns

Atlantic weather is normal here. The cellars and the museums do not care.

Normandy and the Atlantic coast get rain in every month of the year, and Paris takes its share. None of it touches a chalk cellar thirty metres down, a pastry bench, or a museum with a compulsory time slot you booked anyway.
